Sarah’s day had begun rather decently. She’d followed her daily routine rather smoothly, and she’d been in a fairly pleasant mood for a few hours. That is, until she entered a convenience store and spotted a familiar face at the counter. The surprise had made her forget what she was doing, and had left her paralyzed at her spot. She only managed to sap back into reality when the person left the store, and she started to follow him, but it had been no use. Her brother had gone out of sight, and, if he’d seen her, then he hadn’t even bothered to stop and say hello.
She hated it, hated that he refused to talk to her, hated that he was stubborn enough to just walk out on his family like that. A part of her just wondered if he was doing it on purpose, just to cause them grief, but she didn’t dare to dwell on the matter. After the encounter - if it could be called that - in the convenience store, Sarah had run back home, grabbed her soccer ball and ran out of the house again, in the sudden need to block any thought on the subject…
The problem was, it wasn’t that easy.
She’d asked a few friends to come and play with her, and yes, they had, but, upon seeing the mood she was in, they had begun asking questions. Questions that she couldn’t answer - or, more like, she couldn’t answer sincerely. Her friends knew that her family had a few issues, but they didn’t know, they couldn’t know how they had originated. She couldn’t tell them that. Not without having to tell them about her being a protettore - which, of course, she couldn’t do. She could have easily lied and given them a simpler explanation, but she couldn’t do that either. Sarah hated lying to her loved ones, as necessary as it could be every now and then. Eventually, when her frustration had reached its breaking point, she’d pretty much just stopped the game and dismissed everyone. Which left her alone with nothing to do, besides getting lost in her thoughts.
Eventually, Sarah had ended up sitting on the grass. She was holding her soccer ball upon her knees and far away, it seemed, from reality. For once, she was trying not to think of anything, but it was hard - her earlier almost encounter with her older brother that day kept up slipping into her brain at regular intervals.
I should have said something. Anything, whatever…
“Darn it,” she muttered to herself. “Darn it, darn it, DARN IT” she snapped, in sudden anger. Without thinking, she grabbed the soccer ball and tossed it away in a random direction. And then she regretted it.
What on Earth is wrong with me…? she thought, letting out a sigh. This wasn’t like her. She was letting the stress get to her, something she wouldn’t normally do on a daily basis. She pulled herself together and strided off to go look for her ball.
She just hoped she hadn’t hit anyone. That would have been just bad.

Kiana could feel the warmth of the sun through the thin fabric of her shirt and she smiled as that warmth relaxed her. There had been a little rumor moving around the few members of her pack that there had been a Hunter sighting nearby. These rumors always stressed out Kiana. The last time she had run into a Hunter had been last winter, a thick layer of snow had covered everything and all she had been trying to do was get used to such different conditions. She'd been lucky to get out of the situation as easily as she had, the Hunter had only had a bow and arrows with him, weapons not suited to the place and how close he had been to her. That night hadn't left her with any confidence about Hunter encounters though, it had just left her even more nervous and worried that she wouldn't be able to keep her cool if she was faced with another killer. The last thing she wanted was more blood on her hands, no matter how much her wolf side didn't really seem to mind that idea.
It was ironic that when she was stressing about something that her wolf side wanted to do, about someone who would kill her on sight if she was a wolf, she wanted to shift. If it weren't for the fact that it was broad daylight and that the moon was only a small crack, she would have shifted and went running for as long as she could have. Stress was something that triggered shifts for her but it was also something that relieved the stress. She didn't understand it but when there was enough moon out for her to be able to shift, she found it an oddity that was was actually helpful. Running as a wolf was a much better stress reliever than getting angry and hurting someone or writing bad poetry that if found would hurt someone as well. With no way for her to shift right then, she would have to find another way to relieve stress. The sun was helping so she just sat down on the edge of a park. She sat silently, almost falling asleep a couple of times until her back started to feel like it was burning.
I need to find something to do, she thought to herself as she stood up, stretching her legs quickly before walking near the perimeter of the park. She could see children on the playground equipment, parents sitting on the surrounding benches...she'd seen teenagers playing soccer before but it looked like they had gone now. There wasn't really much for her to do at the park, she wasn't really too sure why she had come to the park in the first place apart from the fact that the grass had looked a nice place to sit to enjoy the summer sun. Now though, she was wondering if she should have done something like join the teenagers playing soccer. She never really socialised with those her age, not since she had gotten settled down in this area and she missed it. There was only one person in the park around her age but she wasn't going to bother her, even with how far away she was, Kiana could tell the girl wasn't happy.
That thought was just backed up as the girl started shouting. It surprised Kiana, to see such an outburst in public. If she had done something like that back at her old pack, especially around children she would have been punished. She wasn't back at her old pack though, she was out living with humans and with them things weren't as strict. The girl wouldn't get in trouble for shouting in public, the worst that would happen would be judging looks or parents deciding to move their children further away from her. It did make Kiana wonder if maybe she should go up to the girl though, see if there was anything she could do to help. That was, until the soccer ball came flying towards her. With her fast werewolf reflexes, catching the ball before it hit her wasn't difficult at all. It was one of those times when Kiana was extremely thankful for the abilities she had, the last thing she wanted was a bruised face from a soccer ball.
She slipped the soccer ball under her arm and waved at the girl who was now up and moving, most likely looking for the ball she'd just thrown. Seeing the girl walking in the wrong direction and not even looking towards her, Kiana called out and started jogging towards the girl. "Hey, it's over here!" As she ran over to the girl she debated with herself on what she would do. Was she just going to give the girl back her soccer ball and walk away or should she ask what was wrong? Kiana had no where to be and no reason to not stop and talk to the girl but she wasn't sure if she wanted to. She still had her own worries about the Hunter sighting floating around in her mind. She wasn't sure that listening to someone elses problems would help her at all. But then, the chance that the girl would actually want to talk to a stranger about whatever was wrong was so low. "Is everyone alright?"

The worst part of all this was that that day had been supposed to be amazing. How could it be any other way? What about the lovely weather, what about how well things had gone up until a few hours ago? It was harsh, having the enchantment of it broken away so easily. It was supposed to be a day to enjoy. In the end, it just… wasn’t. Her mood was ruined so easily! Sarah sighed as she regained control on her temper. This wasn’t right. How childish was that - to go on a screaming fit out of nowhere? Very childish, that was for sure. Still, she couldn’t help it. At least, not when it came to the subject of her brother. She carefully edged away from that thought, fearing that she might start screaming again if she didn’t - or worse, fearing that she might start to actually take her frustration out on random, innocent bystanders. Which… she might have already done by throwing the soccer ball away from her. Great, she thought. A split second after she’d started striding away to look for her ball, she heard a voice calling out to her. Sarah turned to see a girl jogging lightly toward her, holding the missing object. She walked toward her. “Thanks. Hope I didn’t hit ya,” she said, and placed an apologetic smile on her face. The girl didn’t look hurt, or anything similar, but that meant nothing. There were people who could hide what was ailing them so well… it was always hard to tell. Wasn’t that the very same thing she was trying to do, just now? To hide? The smile faded slowly at her question, though. Oh. She’d noticed, huh? Well, darn. “I… Yeah. It’s okay,”Sarah tried to force the smile back onto her face, but it was no use. The stress that was currently tearing at her insides had finally torn her mask apart, and she felt like she couldn’t hide any longer. It wasn’t a feeling Sarah liked. She just felt exposed, tense - almost as though she’d been caught misbehaving. “… I think. No, actually, it’s not… okay…” she sighed, finally admitting her defeat. As the girl turned and started over towards Kiana, it was obvious she was at least a bit calmer than she had been when throwing the soccer ball. She didn't seem completely calm though and Kiana couldn't be sure whether she was imagining it or not but she could almost feel that the girl was putting on a brave face. Maybe that was just because Kiana felt as if she were putting on a brave face herself. This whole situation was at least a good distraction from the Hunter rumors, she decided, and a distraction was exactly what she needed. If there was no chance for Kiana to be able to shift and get rid of her stress that way, then maybe if she was distracted from it for long enough it would go away that way. It was her best bet.
Kiana smiled as she passed the soccer ball over to the girl. "It didn't, I managed to catch it," Kiana said, almost laughing. "Maybe I should think about joining a sports team." She was joking - mostly - as she said that. She knew it wouldn't be fair for a werewolf to be playing competitive sports with humans but with how much she wasn't really socialising, it might be a good thing for her. She could just play bad, not use her extra speed or reflexes to her advantage. Of course, the chances of her being able to do that in a competitive situation wasn't very likely. Still...she wondered if the girl might be able to help her in finding a sports team to join, maybe she was in a soccer team or something. Maybe she would ask but not right then. Later.
The girl's smile faded at Kiana's question. Her answer was just about what Kiana had expected, an "I'm fine" type answer that most people gave to strangers - and even those close - when asked as they were okay or alright. Kiana was in one way relieved and in another trying to think of something else to say to start an actual conversation with the girl. If she walked away, she'd just be back to finding something to do, something to distract her from her stress and the dangerous rumors. Looking at the girl, she really couldn't think of anything much to say apart from asking her about soccer.
But then the girl changed her answer to “… I think. No, actually, it’s not… okay…” and Kiana frowned slightly. The girl now looked as distressed as she had seemed when she had been shouting and had thrown the soccer ball. For a couple of moments, Kiana wasn't sure what to do or say. She knew how to comfort her friends but what did she do when a stranger admitted not being okay? She felt awkward and under pressure, if she said the wrong thing could she just make the girl feel even worse? Making a joke was a choice on what to do, say something like "throwing soccer balls at people won't fix your problem". But she ended up saying the only thing other thing she could really think of saying. "Um, what's wrong?" And she felt stupid for saying it as soon as it left her mouth.
