She is like any typical 10 year old; she plays and can complain when asked to do chores. She has very artistic interests and loves to go shopping. She often goes camping, hiking, and kayaking with her dad. She has been very against any women that her father has brought home (and rightfully so). :: HISTORY: Erik Koten met Alice during his trip to New York. He was visiting on business to seal a deal with a big-time company that would ultimately save his own company that distributed cigars. He had just flown in from England and was working his way to his hotel, despite the fact the airport had misplaced his bags. Frustrated and exhausted, he made a pit stop at a local pizza shop where Alice happened to be waitressing. Since he was already having a bad night, Erik decided to stick around long after he was done eating, to have a few drinks and to talk to his waitress. Eventually, it came around to closing time and Alice politely asked him to leave. Stumbling to his hotel, Erik vowed to return to the restaurant the following day to see his stunning waitress again (after he realized he hadn’t caught her name).
Erik’s luck changed the next day beginning with his meeting with NTC Cigars Inc. and saving his company by agreeing to sell the company’s trademark cigars in his own store. His luck branched farther as he returned to the pizza restaurant he had been to the night before and finding Alice working again. After spending the night talking to her again and getting to know each other, she finally agreed to get a drink with him. One thing leading to another, they ended up together at Erik’s hotel room. Despite the connection he had with Alice, Erik had to leave to return to his home in England to continue running his company.
Erik eventually forgot about his night in New York until he got a letter informing him that he was a father as a result of that one evening he shared with Alice. Alice didn’t have any close relatives that could successfully take on the responsibilities of a child, so he was contacted to receive the child as the mother had died during the delivery of the child. Erik reluctantly packed his bags, contemplating the thought of how a child would impact his business and his life. Flying to New York, he discovered a very different and even more complicated situation than what was described in the letter. Arriving at the hospital, he learned that the child had been moved to a child protective service until he could get her; but she wasn’t alone.
Erik finally met Ailee for the first time when she was only 3 weeks old. She was the cutest cubbiest little girl he had ever seen and there was no doubt that she was his child. Sporting his bright red hair and his nose, she looked just like him. Along with Ailee, there was another child, a twin. This baby did not resemble him at all, there was no way that she could be his child. The lady in charge of the child protective service explained that the two girls were bi-paternal twins, an anomaly where two eggs are fertilized by two sperm from two separate donors. Seeing as he wasn’t even the father of the other twin he explained that one child would be enough to take care of as a single dad and that he couldn’t take on two children. Feeling a bit torn about his decision to leave a helpless babe, Erik left with Ailee and returned to England, leaving the twin in New York.
Years after returning to England, Erik had not heard anything about his daughter’s half-sister, nor had he informed Ailee of her sister. The choice of leaving the baby with no family (that he knew of) weighed heavy on him and often occupied his thoughts until an event changed his perspective on everything and impacted life as he knew it.
Ailee was only 10 years old when she fell ill. She appeared fine and then one day couldn’t get out of bed she was so sick. After being reviewed by many doctors, she was diagnosed with Meningitis. Ailee spent most of her time in a tub filled with ice to try to break the fever. The doctors told Erik that his daughter was going to die if they couldn’t get the fever under control, and even if they did manage to break the fever, there would probably be a good deal of brain damage. Ailee was the best thing that ever entered Erik’s life and he wouldn’t just give up on her. He researched for non-traditional healers to help his daughter and came across a doctor that worked at a practice called Children of the Night.
After researching Children of the Night, Erik immediately contacted them after seeing how many patients that had full recoveries from terminal diseases. When the doctor showed up to the house, dressed in all black, he asked to be alone with Ailee. Hoping that the doctor could fix Ailee, Erik agreed and anxiously waited while the doctor worked his magic. Hours later, the doctor came downstairs and explained what would happen next. Part of being healed required that human blood be administered to the child every day to keep them healthy. Erik was required to not inform the child she would be drinking blood until she reached 13 years of age and then he should contact Children of the Night again for a better explanation. Erik agreed, completely confused, and the mysterious doctor left. Ailee woke days later. When she opened her eyes she quickly shut them tight. The sounds were too loud, the lights too bright, and the burning…. Oh the burning…. Erik came in the room and gave her a bottle of dark red liquid. When she asked what it was, he told her it was what healed her and what would keep her healthy. After taking a sip, she knew that it would quench her burning but she would need more. A lot more.
After that first day, Erik knew deep down that something was wrong and different about Ailee. He reached out to some other individuals healed by Children of the Night and learned that they heal by Vampirism. Sworn to secrecy he talked to them to learn how to manage his daughter’s new way of living. He knew the biggest thing she would run into would be feeding and noticing other children weren’t like her. He pulled Ailee out of school and began homeschooling, but after a short period, he began to notice how depressed she was getting being cooped up at home. Erik then decided to call the child protective services in New York. He had to know what happened to Ailee’s twin. She needed someone in her life. Someone who could spend time with her and keep her company. Little did he know they had more in common than their bloodline.
