:: Nathaniel Gabriel Knight-Ramirez :: Basics! :: NICKNAMES: Nate or Nathan by most, sometimes goes by his middle name, Gabriel, or Gabe-a shortened version of his middle name, Dr. Knight to his patients or acquaintances. :: AGE: 25 :: BIRTHDAY: July 18, 1988 :: GENDER: Male :: SEXUALITY: Heterosexual :: FACE CLAIM: Eduardo Verastegui :: MEMBER GROUP: Werewolf :: LANGUAGES SPOKEN: Spanish, Italian, English, and some French :: OCCUPATION: Therapist Personality!
:: LIKES:- Cheshire (Chess or Chessy for short), his pet cat-Nate has raised Chess from a small, playful kitten and is now quite protective of his pet. Chess was with him on that fateful day and against all odds, managed to survive. In fact, one could say that Nate owes Chess his life as during the attack, the tabby attacked the werewolf and distracted it long enough for Nate to get away. Since then, Chess hasn’t left Nate’s side once and is probably one of the only reasons Nate is able to stay sane, for now.
- Playing the piano/violin- Even since before his transformation, playing instruments has always been a way to help him relax. Now is no exception and Nate finds that sometimes it helps keep the beast at bay as if it too enjoys the music. Sometimes Nate composes his own music but most of the time he doesn’t play for an audience unless requested and even then with quite a bit of reluctance.
- Card/Board games- Games of strategy and the like are one of Nate’s favorite past times, chess being among one of his favorite games. Though he doesn’t consider himself as skilled as he would like at the game, he is actually quite good at it. Games that make one think are a nice way to pass the time after all, and they appear to confound the wolf part of him which is a plus in Nate’s eyes.
- Birds-Nate loves watching birds soar through the air and often finds himself wishing he could join them. Unfortunately it is impossible for him to sprout wings and glide through the air so he must content himself with watching them. He loves listening to the songs the different variety of birds make and can even name the species of bird just by their song alone. Though not an avid bird watcher, it is something else that Nate has found is calming and has since started watching them more, often with Chess at his side.
- Reading- Priding himself on being rather well read, Nate has read just about every genre of book there is though he tends to prefer more intellectual books. On rainy days especially, when he’s not playing one of his instruments, he can be found with a book in his hand along with his ever present cat ‘reading’ along with him. Given the chance, Nate loves discussing what books he has read or what other people suggest reading; far be it for Nate to pass up a good book, avid reader that he is.
- Freedom- Nate has a bit of what can be deemed as wanderlust. He loves to travel a variety of places and considering his job does in fact demand that of him at times, he couldn’t be happier. True, he does have to work once he arrives at the destination but Nate never passes up an opportunity to see more of the world. Nate honestly can’t stand being in one place for too long and now that he’s a werewolf, this urge to travel or even just run with no destination in mind, has only gotten stronger.
:: DISLIKES:
- Bullies- Having been bullied as a young boy, Nate abhors those who would seek to hurt others simply because they appear weaker. He won’t just sit by and watch while someone else is intentionally hurting another and is prone to getting himself in trouble by butting when he sees such situations. There is no better way than to get Nate angry than to hurt someone in any way just because they appear weaker.
- Dogs- Ironic as it is, Nate has never been much of a dog person and has little patience for them. Yes, dogs are cute, he’ll give them that much but he prefers the free spirit that cats exhibit rather than the dependent, and almost needy attitude dogs give out.
- Lying- Nate despises lying in any form. This is especially true because his profession requires him to know the truth about the other person and as such he is quite skilled at picking out lies. It’s a waste of his time if someone should choose to lie to him anyway and Nate loathes deceit with a passion.
- Disrespect- He will not tolerate disrespect towards himself or other figures of authority. It is very rare that Nate will treat others with disrespect unless the other party has done something to anger him. All courtesies that would have been granted are tossed out the window at that point and they may or may not find an angry wolf staring them down.
- Ignorance- There is no excuse for not knowing what common sense is though clearly humanity has since deserted its use. Nate has little patience for people who would go to the trouble to purposely act like a nitwit or won’t take the time to try and understand something so simple as the instructions written right in front of them. People who do not seek their own answers and ask it of others, as if expecting everyone to be walking encyclopedias, is just lazy and one of Nate’s biggest pet peeves to say the least.
- Loud Noises- As if his ears weren’t already sensitive enough due to his musical training, his hearing has only heightened as a werewolf. Needless to say, Nate is rather jumpy when around extremely loud sounds and is prone to snapping at others to stop being so loud.
:: HABITS:- Running his fingers through his hair- It’s a nervous habit that he’s tried to stop on more than one occasion. Thus far he has never been successful and besides, his hair is a wild mane that constantly needs to be fixed if he doesn’t want to use a mass of hair gel. Yes, that is reason enough to continue the habit, clearly.
- Smirking- Usually a neon sign that Nate is about to use sarcasm or that he is amused. He rarely ever smiles but smirking is just easier for him for whatever reason.
- Sarcasm- Snark knight is pretty much what Nate is, enough said.
- Biting his lip- Yet another nervous habit or when he is trying to find the right words to say. There are a number of occasions in which this habit will show itself but the most prominent one is when Nate is fighting his wolf side or is staying off a rather angry response.
- Humming- Sometimes Nate will get a song in mind to perhaps play on the violin later and will hum the tune while he is working or during whatever he might be doing at the time.
:: STRENGTHS:
- Compassionate- Nate is a tender-hearted soul when it comes down to it. He knows firsthand how tough life can be for some and goes out of his way to help those in need. He can be a bit of a bleeding heart at times but his intentions are good. However, just because Nate has a kind spirit doesn’t mean that he’s gullible. As said before he can usually catch when someone is lying or trying to con him and thus he isn’t so quick to believe every sob story he hears.
- Protective- Ever since he was young, Nate has always looked out for those that others deemed as weak. When he was in the orphanage he acted like a big brother to a lot of the younger kids and could always be counted on to be there when needed. This hasn’t changed and in fact has only gotten stronger as time went on, especially now that he is a werewolf. Nate is very protective of those he holds dear and will not stand to see them hurt without some sort of recourse.
- Loyal- Once Nate’s trust has been gained he will always be there for the person in question, regardless of circumstances; the same can be said of his friends and those he still considers his family, biological or not. That being said, it is not easy for most to get close to Nate since he has become rather guarded ever since the incident. He hasn’t been able to get very close to anyone since then and thus if he does form a bond with someone, he will be a very dependable friend to say the least.
- Empathetic- It’s very easy for Nate to be able to relate to another person’s circumstances. This is part of the reason why he is so good at his job since Nate has experienced a lot of what some, if not most, of his patients struggle with. He finds it easy to put himself in another person’s shoes to put it simply and thus does what he can to cheer others up when he can. Now that he’s a werewolf, he’s more sensitive to the people around him and thus finds it easier to read people. This being said, he tends to use this gift to help him with his work if only for expediency’s sake.
- Persuasive- Nate has a definitive silver tongue and is able to use words and subtle gestures to ensure that he gets what he wants. Combined with his ability to speak in various languages he can be quite the diplomat to say the least. It makes it easier to get others to agree with him to say the least considering he can use words as sweet as honey to make the option seem the most advisable. If it weren’t for his almost incessant desire to protect and help others Nate would make a rather good salesperson or perhaps even a lawyer.
:: WEAKNESSES:
- Control- Due to the nature of his transformation into a werewolf, Nate has no control whatsoever over the wolf that has forced his way into his mind. He hates the wolf and wants to kill the beast but innately knows that doing so now would only end his own life as well. Nate has outright rejected the wolf part of him and is almost constantly fighting with it in order to keep it at bay. This is a rather large strain on his sanity to say the least and when he is forced to fight the wolf back, he is hardly lucid or in control of his actions. During these moments, Nate does his best go somewhere secluded where he can’t possibly hurt anyone should the wolf take control.
- Anger- Nate doesn’t get angry very easily when he is in control. However, now that he is a werewolf he is more apt to act rashly should his control be slipping even the slightest and is prone to more violent behavior. There are very few instances in which Nate will get well and truly angry but it isn’t wise to test these boundaries lest both the wolf and man agree on getting back at the offender.
- Rules/Limitations- Nate doesn’t like being trapped to say the least. Sometimes he feels as if he is suffocating if he stays in one place for too long as his wanderlust takes hold. He hates having strict rules and limitations placed on him for this reason and is often prone to breaking them if only to escape the figurative cage. Nate has a free spirit and doesn’t like being chained down long at all, be it literally or figuratively and thus sees rules more as guidelines or mere suggestions to be followed if one feels like it.
- Pride- Pride comes before the fall as they say and Nate is no exception. He can be quite stubborn and refuse to give headway in and argument and has actually landed himself in some trouble because of this. Nate refuses to admit that he is wrong and will even go so far as to weave a convincing argument to try and persuade the other party that his answer was in fact accurate.
- Perfectionist- Nate is truly his own worst critic to the point where he might have a minor form of OCD. This is one of the reasons he doesn’t like to play his original pieces for an audience unless he is satisfied that they are finished. Most of the time they simply aren’t ‘good enough’ to be heard in a group setting when in fact the piece in question might be applauded by all those who heard it. He demands perfection from himself and expects others to have the same standards only to get aggravated when they aren’t met. To Nate, it seems that he has to do everything himself in order to get anything done the way it is supposed to be. This mindset often lands him in trouble as Nate tends to take on too much work at one time and get overwhelmed by upcoming deadlines and the like.
:: OVERALL PERSONALITY: Nate may seem a bit daunting at first but this is merely a façade he puts in place to keep others from getting too close. Ever since he lost his family and fiancée it has been harder for him to let others in lest he risk that same pain again. Nate is not heartless however and helps people in need whenever he has the ability and time to. He doesn’t like seeing another person upset and though he may not go out of his way to cheer them up; Nate will often give them something simple he happens to have on hand and perhaps find a later time to talk to them. Occasionally, Nate will even see a patient free of charge but this is on a per person basis. Truth is, Nate sees little use for money and even though his job pays well he often gives the majority of it away.
When he’s not at work, Nate can be found playing his violin, piano, or any of the numerous other instruments he has collected. He isn’t shy about his love for music but neither does he play any of his original pieces around other people, insisting that they are flawed in some way. This is not to say that Nate refuses to play in front of others at all, just as long as it’s something already well known unless persuaded otherwise. Oftentimes he will stay up late at night playing one of his instruments simply because he enjoys the sound of it and it gives him a certain peace that doesn’t come very often after the attack.
Nate loves to try new things and see new places and is actually very well-travelled for someone his age, never tiring of seeing the many wonders nature has to offer. Other than his love of nature, Nate enjoys trying new things and will never turn down an opportunity to do so. He enjoys the freedom to do things his way without having to constantly worry about rules and regulations. As a result, Nate tends to be a rebel of sorts and sees rules, regulations, and laws as merely suggestions that can be followed when convenient. A bit of a wild card, Nate will do what he wants, whenever he wants and doesn’t really what anyone else thinks about it. Needless to say he can be a bit of a pain in the neck but Nate honestly doesn’t care if people like him or not if it’ll keep them away from him and any possibility that they would talk to him outside of small talk.
Don’t let his fun loving, outgoing nature fool you however, Nate has one goal and only one goal in mind. To seek revenge on those that killed his family and anyone else who happens to stand in his way; he is quite obsessed with revenge and his need to correct his past failures. If there is one thing that Nate cannot stand it is a person who sees them self as a failure and do nothing about it and therein lies the reasoning behind becoming a therapist. Nate’s method of therapy is a little bizarre to say the least…on the surface he’ll seem like a normal therapist to the entire world but outside of the office… Well, let’s just say he likes to perform personal case studies as he stalks his patients to ensure that his patients do as he suggested to improve whatever situation they are currently in.
Due to his compulsion to protect others in danger, Nate has a tendency to be overprotective of those he knows and even sometimes complete strangers much to his annoyance. Sometimes Nate feels compelled to protect others from harm without even knowing them or their situation. Call it a quirk, but Nate cannot simply sit idly by while someone is harmed even if such actions were his undoing and part of the reason he is now a werewolf. However, instead of turning from the behavior that caused him to turn, the urge to protect has only grown stronger, probably as a result from the wolf agreeing with Nate’s own mannerism towards others. Aside from feeling compelled to protect others, Nate truly does want to protect those he loves from harm and harbors a deep fear that if he should get close to someone that he won’t be strong enough to protect them just like what happened on that fateful day. This is why he prefers not to get close to others lest history repeat itself again or heaven forbid, that he should be the one that harms them.
Though Nate may be harsh at times it is exceedingly hard to get him truly angry. He has a very long fuse and is very patient especially considering he sometimes loses track of time or rather, doesn’t really care about it. Nate can be rather lazy at times, wanting to do nothing but just sit and watch the clouds go by and wish the day was over. However even Nate’s patience will wear thin if pushed too far, especially he sees someone consistently repeats the same mistakes over and over again with little to no improvement. Nate cannot stand watching people fail and makes a point to help them succeed however possible if given the opportunity. With his newly formed werewolf abilities, people who continue along this path of failure play a dangerous game where Nate is concerned. He is still working on taming the beast that has entered his mind and thus people who exhibit idiocy or ignorance chance setting off the beast that would prefer to hit first and ask questions never. The only thing that seems to make Nate angry without fail is if anyone scares, endangers, or hurts anybody or anything that he holds dear to him; anyone who does this is just asking to have a raging, feral werewolf come after them.
After recently changing into a werewolf, Nate finds himself constantly fighting with the beast within. In all honesty he hates what he has become and wishes he could simply get rid of the monster that is slowly devouring his sanity. He has outright rejected the wolf that has forced its way into his mind and hates it with every fiber of his being. In Nate’s eyes, the beast that he has become is no better than the same monster that killed everyone he had once held dear. During his more lucid moments, Nate keeps trying to find the werewolf that destroyed his life so he can kill the monster and hopefully reverse the curse that has set upon him. Put simply, Nate is in denial about what he has become and thus does his best to try and appear normal. Though with the wolf pushing for control as the full moon looms closer it is unknown how long he can keep the act up. The wolf side of Nate is more crude and impulsive than his usual calm and collected demeanor and is nigh unpredictable. Thus, Nate tries his best to keep the monster at bay lest he hurt anyone on accident…or worse…History! :: MOTHER: Gabriela Knight (deceased) :: ADOPTIVE MOTHER: Lauretta Ramirez :: FATHER: Stephen Knight (deceased) :: ADOPTIVE FATHER: Romeo Ramirez :: SIBLINGS: Caledonia Ramirez Alejandro Ramirez Christina Ramirez :: SPOUSE: N/A :: CHILDREN: N/A :: PETS: Chess, a black and white tabby
:: HISTORY: Nate’s life started simple enough, born to a couple of loving parents he always knew that they would be there for him and he was right…that is until the unthinkable happened and they were torn from his life forever. They had been going to the next town to attend a festival when a passing truck going way too fast hit them and toppled their car into a ravine. Stephen’s neck was broken by the fall and was killed instantly while Gabriela’s only thought was to protect her then eight-year old son. As a result she suffered severe head trauma and other injuries while Nate remained all but unscathed save for a broken wrist. Gabriela passed away after a few days in the hospital leaving Nate devastated as his parents were ripped out from under him. The doctors were sympathetic but that meant nothing to him…they couldn’t bring them back. Some other people talked to him and asked if he had any other family that he knew of but Nate only shook his head, not knowing what else to do as the truth of his situation really set in. With that said the doctors introduced him to a lady and said that she would take care of him from then on and was carted off to an orphanage to start his new life.
The years passed slowly in the orphanage as Nate watched other kids become adopted but somehow he was passed by each and every time. This suited him just fine; nobody could ever replace his parents and that was exactly what it felt like they were trying to do. Nate kept to himself and tried to remain out of the way and unseen as a bitterness against the one who took his parents away wormed its way into his heart. Nobody should have died, his parents should still be here but that guy…that guy was still out there and it was like nobody cared anymore. As Nate grew more of the kids began to mistreat him, naming him the unwanted kid but Nate had long since ceased caring about whether or not he would be adopted. Instead he started to look after some of the younger kids that the others were picking on and slowly came out of the cocoon of bitterness he’d wrapped around himself. Protecting others from those that would otherwise mistreat them soon became his goal in life, giving him a reason to care again.
Nate had long since given up on the possibility of being adopted when a couple was introduced to him, Lauretta and Romeo Ramirez. At first Nate wrote off the visit as just another day and yet another reason for the kids to tease him but then the unimaginable happened; the Ramirez’s continued to visit just to see him. When it became clear that they weren’t just some strangers visiting, Nate’s change in behavior was remarkable. Sure he still looked after the younger kids and made sure that nobody hurt them on his watch, but there was a definite spring in his step at the mere thought of getting out of the dreary orphanage. He grew to love the Ramirez’s and looked up to them even though he knew, or at least believed, they would never be able to replace his own parents. Finally the day came when Lauretta and Romeo asked if he would like to come home with them; Nate didn’t even have to think twice before saying yes and hugging the couple that had just become his ‘new’ parents.
Though Nate was sad to say goodbye to his friends, he was not going to miss the orphanage in the slightest. The dreary place was by far his least favorite place to be and he certainly wasn’t sad to see it go even after spending nigh five years in the place before he was finally adopted at age eight. When he arrived at his new home, Nate was surprised to find that he had his own room filled with clothes that actually fit him. He had even gained siblings, and quickly grew close to them as he learned more about them. True, he was the youngest out of all of them but that didn’t stop him from being just as protective of his siblings as he had been for his friends back at the orphanage. For whatever reason, Alejandro found this amusing and took to calling him ‘little pup’ which confused Nate at first but he took it in stride after it seemed that his new brother would not be dissuaded from using the name.
The years passed by and Nate found himself adjusting to his new life quite easily and even grew to love playing the various instruments that Lauretta and Romeo kept. He had always loved to play but the orphanage hadn’t been able to afford the instruments so Nate had to content himself with admiring from afar. Sometimes a few of the local store owners would let him play on the instruments they had for sale but these instances were very rare indeed. Now that he was able to play, and even encouraged to do so, Nate couldn’t be happier and was soon found to have a talent for the arts. With his parent’s encouragement, Nate played more and even took to writing a few of his own pieces by the time he graduated high school.
College was a challenging yet fulfilling experience for Nate as he worked towards getting his doctorate degree in psychology with the goal of becoming a therapist in mind. It had initially surprised his parents when he told them what he wanted to be after seeing him grow to be such a musically gifted student. In Nate’s mind however, he wanted to be able to help people that went through some of the same experiences he did. Perhaps in this way he could still play the protector even if it was in some small way. At the very least he could give people the tools they needed in order to get themselves out of the current situation. It was at college that Nate met Clarissa who shared his love of music and desire to help others. The two of them would date for a while before graduating college and getting their perspective jobs, Nate as a therapist, and Clarissa as a nurse at a well-known hospital.
They would date for a few years following getting their careers established until Nate finally asked Clarissa to marry him. To his delight, she said yes without so much as a second thought and the two made plans to head back to Nate's home in Spain to tell his family the good news in person. Lauretta and Romeo were overjoyed at the news while Alejandro teased him about getting hitched while Nate's sisters all but gushed over the news. Unfortunately, their joy wouldn't last forever as later that night a rogue werewolf entered the Ramirez household and wreaked havoc, attacking everyone in sight. Nate had never been so afraid in his life as he fought to try and stay alive and protect everyone else in the household. He was bitten in the process of trying to protect Clarissa while she was slashed badly; the werewolf would have done more damage had it not been for Cheshire who attacked the wolf moments before hunters who had been trailing the beast for a few days showed up. The combined efforts of Chess and the hunters served to chase the werewolf off, saving Nate in the process. Certain that the werewolf would come back to finish him off, Nate tried to rouse the rest of his family to escape. Unfortunately none were responsive and thus Nate escaped on his own with only his faithful cat as his companion.
Following the attack, Nate was paranoid to say the least and after seeking medical attention, he started traveling more to hopefully lose the werewolf or whatever had attacked them that night. Devastated was not a strong enough word for what Nate felt in the days following the ambush. To have lost everyone he loved a second time around....it was almost more than he could take in that moment. The only thing that kept him going, that kept him sane, was Chess and telling himself that things would get better not knowing just how wrong he was... During the weeks that followed, Nate fought a raging fever that just simply wouldn’t go down even after the bite wound had healed. The thought crossed his mind that the wound had been infected but it had healed well and that couldn’t possibly be the reason why he was so sick now. Then the impulses began and Nate was certain that he was going insane and contributed it to the fever as well. That lasted only until the ‘other’ voice appeared a low growl of a beast that seemed to be crawling its way to the surface. It was the same growl that Nate had heard the night of the attack and knew then that the monster had cursed him with this disease that was now overtaking his mind as well as his body.
Even if he was changing into this monster, this thing that had attacked his family and probably killed everyone, Nate was determined to fight it. There was no way he would succumb to the beast inside, he wasn’t going to let it out and find blood on his hands just like that monster. What Nate hadn’t expected was just how hard it would be to fight the beast off especially as the full moon drew ever closer. By this time there was no doubt in Nate’s mind that he was fighting a losing battle against the werewolf that was clawing its way to the surface, raking its claws across whatever sanity he had remaining. The heightened senses, the fever, the feral urge to simply run and never look back…it was all Nate could do to remain sane and if it wasn’t for Chess, Nate probably would've gone mad a long time ago. The cat reminded him of what he had lost true, the kitten had been a gift from Clarissa for Christmas some years back after all, but it also reminded him that he couldn’t lose, not for anything.
Thus Nate continued to travel, hoping that the journey would help him keep his sanity in at least some way. But with the full moon looming ever closer, it is only a matter of time before the beast breaks through…perhaps for good…only time will tell.
